ASME SB338 is a Standard Specification for Seamless and Welded Titanium and Titanium Alloy Tube or Tubing for Surface Condensers, Evaporators, and Heat Exchangers. It is the same as ASTM B338 with some minor differences in product marking. There are 28 grades of titanium and titanium alloys used for pipe, with titanium grades 2, 7 and 12 being the most common in pipe applications.
Grade 7 titanium tubing is mechanically and physically identical to CP 2 grade titanium, but due to the addition of palladium to grade 7 titanium, it is the most corrosion resistant of all titanium alloys. Grade 7 titanium tubes are widely used in heat exchange equipment such as tubular heat exchangers, coil heat exchangers, serpentine heat exchangers, condensing evaporators and conveying pipes. Many nuclear power industries use grade 7 titanium tubing as the standard tube for their equipment.
Titanium seamless tubes shall be made from hollow billets by any cold drawing or cold rolling process, with a continuous perimeter at all stages of the manufacturing operation. Titanium welded pipes shall be made from annealed flat rolled sheets by automatic arc welding or other welding processes.
